Program Structure

Begin of page section: Contents:

Musikologie is a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Arts (MA) program.

Following the MA, various doctorate programs are available at both University of Graz and University of Music and Performing Arts Graz.

Bachelor

The BA program lasts for 3 years (6 semesters) and comprises 180 ECTS. In the first 3 semesters, students learn foundations of musicology in five focus areas: music in history, jazz and popular music, ethnomusicology, music psychology/acoustics, and music aesthetics. Starting in the 4th semester (the middle of the 2nd year), students specialize in two of the five areas.

Master

The Master’s program lasts for 4 semesters and comprises 120 ECTS. Students choose one of the five focus areas, but also take units from other areas. The focus lies on critical evaluation of advanced current literature and the student’s independent research project. Students analyze and critically reflect on their research questions and empirical methods. They acquire the ability to carry out research in specific areas and present empirical and theoretical findings in the context of current research.
