Structure of the degree program
The Bachelor's program comprises 6 semesters and 180 ECTS credits and concludes with the academic degree Bachelor of Arts, BA. Subjects include music history and contemporary music, the relationship between music and society, music aesthetics, the different music cultures of the world, the media and technologies of music distribution and production, music psychology and musical acoustics.
The Master's program comprises 4 semesters and 120 ECTS credits and concludes with the academic degree Master of Arts, MA. The focus is on the independent treatment of scientific issues and the promotion of critical reflection on research results and methodological approaches. Graduates should be able to independently familiarize themselves with new problems and develop methodologically sound results, taking into account the current state of research.
Focus of the musicology degree program
As part of the musicology degree course, there are five specializations that students can choose according to their interests.
They are completed during the Bachelor's degree course as part of the restricted electives (GWF). For more information, see also the structure of the Bachelor's degree program. It is essential to note possible prerequisites for attending individual courses. In the Master's degree course, the respective specialization is selected at the start of the course.
Ethnomusicology
Research into performance in social and cultural contexts using ethnographic, historical, analytical (quantitative + qualitative), critical-theoretical methods and interpretations.

Jazz and popular music
Knowledge of the history and prehistory of jazz; knowledge of selected areas of popular music; transcription and analysis of works.

Music in history
Knowledge of music history and various areas of historical musicology (e.g. church music history, music of the Middle Ages and modern times, interpretation and analysis of old and new music, social history of music, opera, film music, popular music forms, music history of the 20th and 21st centuries).

Music aesthetics
Knowledge of various areas of music aesthetics and sociology (e.g. production and reception aesthetics, modern music, multimedia forms, sociology of European art music, gender research), overview of music aesthetic and music sociological approaches and methods.

Music psychology and acoustics
In-depth knowledge in the following areas of music psychology and musical acoustics, among others: relevant research methods and techniques, including quantitative and qualitative research methods as well as methods of computer-aided music research.
