Guidelines for Winter Semester 2021

Students attend 12 talks, selected from a longer list (see Moodle), and submit 12 concise reports at the end of the semester, one for each attended talk. Talks can be either live or virtual. Students must physically attend the talks unless the organizers offer a live stream and check virtual attendance.

It is possible to attend several talks within a single event (e.g., a conference) and to count each one separately, provided each talk is included in the "Liste der Vorträge für Musikwissenschaft aktuell" and attendance is recorded separately for each talk.

The report for each talk should be one page with font size 11 to 12, line spacing 1.15 to 1.5, and margins about 2.5 cm. Regardless of the language of the talk, reports may be written in either English or German.

Each report should be divided into three parts with the following headings:

1. Thematic classification: To which area(s) of musicology does the talk belong? Which other disciplines or research directions are relevant?

2. Summary: a concise overview of the content of the talk, in your own words. What did the speaker talk about? What were the most important questions and theses - both general and specific?

3. Reflection: a short, constructive evaluation of, and reflection upon, the talk. Constructively assess the content and its presentation. Which topics, questions or theses were interesting? Why? What are the prospects for further research?

Graders will evaluate the above three points. Reports must be written in clearly legible, grammatically correct, academic style. A higher standard is expected in the MA than in the BA.

Please begin each report with:

  • Name of course, course number, BA or MA, semester
  • Your name and matriculation number
  • Date of the talk, name of the speaker, talk title

Electronic Submission

Protocols are submitted electronically. Write an email to the Center for Systematic Musicology at the address sysmus(at)uni-graz.at with subject "Musikwissenschaft aktuell: Protokolle". Write the following in the email text:

  • The course for which you need a grade: whether BA or MA, name and number of the LV (for MA: whether 4.3, 4.4 or 5.3), year, winter/summer (NB: In the BA, this course is assigned to the winter semester, regardless of when you actually attend the lectures);
  • A list of the 12 attended talks (date, speaker, title of talk);
  • The following text: "I hereby declare that I have written all of the attached transcripts alone and have not assisted any other student(s) with the writing of such transcripts";
  • Your name and matriculation number

Include in the attachment the 12 pdf files, one for each talk. Please use the following format for the file names:

Speaker_YYYYMMDD_Student_BA/MA.pdf. Example: Schmidt_20180313_Cong_MA.pdf would be a transcript of a talk given on March 13, 2018 by Mr./Mrs. Schmidt. Author of the protocol is named Cong and is enrolled in MA.

Each of the files should have a maximum size of 100KB.

Deadlines

The deadline after the winter semester is February 15, after the summer semester July 15. These deadlines must be strictly adhered to, as the process of grading the protocols is relatively time-consuming: we cooperate with several colleagues from KUG and the University of Graz. Therefore, we recommend that students write all protocols by the end of the semester and hand them in early. For the same reason, grades may not be entered until the end of the first month in the following semester.

After the grades are entered, the course instructor will be happy to provide feedback on the protocols on request.

Exception

With advance written permission, it is possible to spread this course unit across two successive semesters, at the end of which you submit 12 reports as usual (some from the current semester and some from the immediately preceding semester). When submitting, please explain

  • in which semesters you attended the talks, and
  • for which LV (BA or MA; LV number, semester) you need a grade.
